The public image of today’s international literary stars is more often defined by the Internet and worldwide book tours than by what they write. Many successful authors feel that their celebrity has little to do with their work, and even less with themselves and their personal lives. In this discussion, two successful European writers, Jaume Cabré and Daniel Kehlmann, engage in a conversation about the alienating effects of seeing one’s life reflected in the public eye.
Daniel Kehlmann was born in Munich. He is the author of Measuring the World and, most recently, Fame. Among his accolades are the Candide Prize, the Literature Prize of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, and the Thomas Mann Prize. Kehlmann divides his time between Vienna and Berlin.
Jaume Cabré is a Catalan author and scriptwriter. Among his many distinctions are the Premi CrÃtica Serra d’Or, the Catalan Critics’ Prize and Premi d’Honor de les Lletres Catalanes.
The collection of short stories Winter Journey is his first work to be translated into English.
Co-Sponsored by Deutsches Haus, Institut Ramon Llull, Pro Helvetia and the German Literary Society
The Eighth Annual PEN World Voices of International Literature: April 30-May 6, 2012
