Victor LaValle is the award-winning author of the novels The Ecstatic and Big Machine (which he read at Greenlight), and a collection of short stories, Slapboxing with Jesus. His new novel The Devil In Silver brings together the themes present in all of LaValle’s fiction: faith, class, madness, and our relationship with the unseen and the uncanny. It is also a horror story with a grotesque monster, an expose of bureaucracies and healthcare, a story of friendships in the most unlikely of circumstances, and an exploration of the real versus the imagined, the truth versus the system. Victor discusses the novel and these compelling themes with like-minded author Kelly Link, founder of the literary journal Lady Churchill’s Rosebud Wristlet and the publisher Small Beer Press, as well as the author of the surreal and magical story collections Stranger Things Happen, Magic for Beginners and Pretty Monsters.
