Dirty Looks: On Curating Queer Experimental Cinema

The core creative team behind Dirty Looks, a monthly platform for queer experimental film and video, will discuss the curatorial initiatives behind the screening series, its monthly publications, and special project, Dirty Looks: On Location, which found 13 emerging curators installing experimental moving image works in current and former sites of queer sociality throughout New York City. Dirty Looks is a roaming screening series, a salon of influences, an open platform for inquiry, discussion, and debate.
Bradford Nordeen was born in St. Louis, MO. He holds an MA in Cinema Cultures from King’s College London and a BFA in Photography and Media from CalArts. The founder of Dirty Looks, a monthly platform for queer experimental film and video and the site-specific off-shoot series, Dirty Looks: On Location, a month of queer interventions in New York City spaces, Nordeen has organized screenings internationally at venues like PARTICIPANT INC, The Kitchen, the Hammer Museum, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, White Columns, Artists Space, and Judson Memorial Church. His writing has been published in Art In America, the Huffington Post, Lambda Literary, Little Joe, X-TRA Contemporary Art Quarterly, and Butt Magazine, among others. He lives in Brooklyn, NY.
David Everitt Howe is a Brooklyn-based independent curator and critic. He received his BFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design and his MA in Modern Art: Critical and Curatorial Studies from Columbia University. He has curated exhibitions for Scaramouche, Abrons Arts Center, Performa, and 47 Canal, and his writing has appeared in The Village Voice, ArtReview, Art Papers, Flash Art International, Modern Painters, Frieze, Kaleidoscope, Mousse, and Afterall, among other publications. He is the Curatorial and Development Associate at Participant Inc.
Karl McCool is an independent curator working in Philadelphia and New York. He received his BA in English Literature and LGBT Studies from Temple University. He has assisted Dirty Looks, initiating screenings by Chris E. Vargas and Brice Dellsperger, as well as historical revivals of Guy Hocquenghem and Lionel Soukaz’s ‘Race D’Ep!’ (Breed of Faggots), 1979 and Lothar Lambert’s ‘1 Berlin-Harlem,’ 1974.
