This lecture will provide information about the development of the heart in vertebrate embryos (“ontogenetic origins”). Professor Christiaen will use his research to highlight recent findings about the “evolutionary origins” of the heart cells and the genetic program that governs heart development. Finally, he will explain how understanding the mechanisms that determine cardiovascular progenitors (“heart stem cells”) is important for cardiovascular regenerative medicine.
