Charles Gaines was born in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1944 and raised in Newark, New Jersey. He received an MFA from Rochester Institute of Technology, School of Art and Design, New York, in 1967, and a BA from Jersey City State College in 1966. Recent solo exhibitions include the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2015), Studio Museum in Harlem, New York (2014), and Pomona College Museum of Art and Pitzer Art Galleries, Pitzer College, Claremont, California (2012). In 2015 his work was included in group exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. He was also included in the Venice Biennale in 2015. He lives and works in Los Angeles.
